Gospojinski Post 2026 Begins August 14 with Strict Dietary Rules

The Gospojinski (Assumption) Fast for 2026 starts on 14 August and lasts 15 days, ending on 28 August, the day of the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God. Orthodox Christians observe the fast as strictly as the Great Lent, consuming only water on weekdays and allowing oil and wine only on Saturdays and Sundays.

On the feast of the Transfiguration (19 August) fish may be eaten regardless of the weekday. A traditional custom prohibits eating young grapes until the Transfiguration, when they are blessed in church. If the final day, 28 August, falls on a Wednesday or Friday, the fast continues that day with only fish, wine and oil; a full meal is permitted the following day. Many mistakenly overindulge in permitted foods, turning the modest meal into an extravagant spread, which undermines the fast’s purpose of restraint.
