Gotham FC targets record crowd for first NWSL game at New York's Citi Field
Gotham FC will host its first regular‑season National Women’s Soccer League match in New York City at Citi Field, marking the league’s inaugural game at the venue. More than 40,000 tickets have been sold, putting the event within reach of the stadium’s roughly 42,000‑seat capacity. The club aims to surpass its previous single‑game attendance record of 15,569 and to break the city’s women’s‑sports attendance benchmark of 28,144 set at the 2023 U.S. Open women’s final.
Owner Carolyn Tisch Blodgett said the team “had to be part of this moment” as soccer drives cultural conversation, and the Mets organization has worked closely with Gotham to make the event possible. The match will feature star forward Sam Kerr’s likely debut and a showdown with rivals Washington Spirit. Leading up to kickoff, a “Footy Fest” will offer a watch party for the England‑Argentina semifinal, a live podcast recording with former USWNT players, and DJ sets. The club’s VP of brand and fan experience, Laura Petro, credited a strong narrative and outreach to new fans for the surge in ticket sales.
