Gothenburg residents strongly support regional events and economic growth
A new report titled ‘Nordens evenemangshuvudstad’ reveals strong local support for recurring events in the Gothenburg region. According to a survey by Upplevelseinstitutet, 80 percent of residents believe these events enhance the region's attractiveness, while 74 percent find value in the diverse range of culture, entertainment, and sports offered.
Economic impact is a significant factor, with 73 percent of respondents recognizing the socio-economic benefits in terms of jobs and regional growth. The report highlights ten major annual events, including Gothia Cup, Göteborgsvarvet, Bokmässan, and Way Out West, which attract over one million participants annually. Approximately half of these participants are tourists, who contribute an estimated 2.3 billion SEK to the local economy each year.
Magnus Hallberg, Vice CEO and Event Manager at Göteborg & Co, noted that the findings show residents are not only appreciative of the events but also willing to support them through tax funding. The tourism sector in the region currently employs approximately 41,000 people, representing an increase of over 40 percent in the last six years.
