Gothic Voices performs medieval music at Saint Sophia Church

The British Renaissance choir Gothic Voices performed a program of medieval and contemporary music at the Saint Sophia Church as part of the Ohrid Summer festival.

The performance featured various artists, including mezzo-soprano Katherine King, tenors Stephen Harold and Julian Podger, and baritone Simon Whitley. The repertoire included works by Joan Metcalfe, John Dunstaple, Richard Smart, Arvo Pärt, and Leonel Power, as well as Gregorian chants. A central piece of the concert was a work by Norwegian composer Andrew Smith based on the 14th-century text 'Stong wel, moder,' centered on the legend of the Virgin Mary.

In their 46-year history, Gothic Voices has recorded 30 albums for labels such as Hyperion and Avie, receiving multiple 'Edition of the Year' awards from Gramophone magazine. The ensemble is known for blending traditional early music with experimental modern compositions.
