Polícia Judiciária headquarters searched in investigation of director

The Portuguese Public Ministry conducted searches at the headquarters and the Technological Prevention and Support Unit (UPAT) of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) on Wednesday. The operation is part of an investigation into the national director of the PJ, Carlos Cabreiro, regarding allegations of abuse of power and aggravated false testimony.

The inquiry stems from a complaint related to the 2015 Football Leaks investigation. It specifically examines whether Cabreiro provided false statements in court concerning the use of environmental wiretaps during the investigation of Rui Pinto. The case is currently under judicial secrecy, and the Public Ministry has stated that no formal defendants have been charged yet.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro commented on the situation, stating that while investigations into institutions are undesirable, all complaints must be investigated to ensure social trust. The PJ has confirmed its full cooperation with judicial authorities during the proceedings.
