Gotland activists fight to protect nature from limestone mining

Activists and conservationists in Gotland continue to advocate for the protection of local nature, following the historical struggle to save the Ojnareskogen forest from limestone mining. The conflict involved the Finnish company Nordkalk, which sought to establish a limestone quarry in the area.

While the Ojnareskogen campaign gained significant attention in 2012, concerns remain regarding the future of Gotland's natural landscapes. Although the Bästeträsk national park is planned, new proposals for limestone quarries are emerging. Currently, Nordkalk holds ownership of land within the proposed national park area and has declined to sell it to conservation organizations.
