Gotthard Pass implements nightly closures ahead of winter

The Gotthard Pass will remain open for daytime traffic until at least Thursday, November 5, 2026, due to currently stable weather conditions. However, authorities have implemented immediate nightly closures for safety reasons, with the pass being closed from 18:00 to 08:00 daily until the full winter closure begins.

The Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) and the Office for the Management of National Highways (AfBN) of the Canton of Uri are monitoring the situation. A significant deterioration in weather is expected starting Friday, November 6, 2026. An earlier closure remains possible if snowfall or freezing temperatures occur.

Other alpine passes in the Uri region, including the Furka and Susten passes, have already entered their seasonal winter closures. The Oberalp and Klausen passes remain open and accessible under normal conditions.
