Gotthard Road Tunnel fire marks 25th anniversary
Twenty-five years ago, a catastrophic fire occurred in the Gotthard Road Tunnel in Switzerland following a collision between two trucks. On October 24, 2001, a Belgian truck driven by a driver under the influence of alcohol collided with an Italian truck. The resulting crash caused a fuel tank to rupture, igniting diesel fuel and creating a massive inferno with temperatures reaching 1,200 degrees Celsius.
The disaster resulted in eleven deaths, with victims either suffocating from smoke or being burned. The accident led to a fundamental overhaul of tunnel safety regulations across Europe and Switzerland.
In the years following the tragedy, the Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) implemented significant safety upgrades, including optimized ventilation, improved lighting, enhanced emergency signaling, and new radio systems. Specific measures in the Gotthard Tunnel now include thermal portals in Airolo and Göschenen to detect overheating vehicles before they enter, as well as systems to regulate truck spacing and density.
