Gotthard Tunnel traffic jam exceeds 10 km during Swiss holiday travel
On a Monday midday, the north portal of Switzerland's Gotthard Tunnel was blocked by a traffic jam stretching over ten kilometres, forcing drivers to endure wait times of around 100 minutes. The south portal also saw congestion, with roughly four kilometres of cars and a 40‑minute delay.
The jam is linked to the summer holiday season, with many motorists seeking alternative routes such as the A13 via San Bernardino. Similar severe congestion was reported in the weeks prior, including a 20‑kilometre backup that lasted three hours.
The situation highlights the strain on the Alpine crossing during peak travel periods and has prompted calls for better traffic management and traveler information.
