Gouda launches pilot program to combat elderly loneliness

A pilot program has been launched in four large residential complexes for the elderly in Gouda, Netherlands, to combat loneliness. The initiative introduces a ‘flatcoach’—Angelique Muis—who visits residents in the Prinsessenflats and Leckenborch to engage in conversation and monitor their well-being.

The flatcoach does not provide medical care. Instead, the role focuses on social connection, identifying residents at risk of isolation, and facilitating community activities such as coffee mornings or connecting neighbors to help one another. The goal is to help seniors live independently in their familiar environments for longer.

The project is a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Gouda, Mozaïek Wonen, Woonpartners Midden-Holland, and Palet Welzijn. The pilot is scheduled to run for two years and four months, during which organizers will evaluate whether the approach successfully reduces loneliness and improves social contact among residents.
