Gouveia to launch cultural center in Bairro do Castelo

The municipality of Gouveia is launching the ‘Casa do Território – Centro Interpretativo da Identidade e Memória’ project to revitalize the historic Bairro do Castelo. The initiative, budgeted at approximately one million euros, aims to transform the degraded neighborhood into a cultural hub that preserves local history and identity.

The project involves the rehabilitation of an old factory building and seeks to create a space where archaeological collections—ranging from the late Neolithic to the 19th century—can be properly displayed. The museum component will receive scientific collaboration from the Faculty of Letters at the University of Coimbra.

This intervention is part of a broader urban regeneration strategy that includes the previously inaugurated Casa da Vivência Judaica. The goal is to support the elderly population currently residing in the area while simultaneously attracting tourism and fostering social and economic development through cultural heritage.
