Gov. Celina Leão rolls out housing aid and inaugurates Distrito Federal Ginger Day

Governor Celina Leão delivered the Construction Materials Card to Maria Cristina Alves da Silva in Santa Luzia, Estrutural, on 13 June. The benefit, created by the Distrito Federal government in May 2025, provides up to R$15,000 for building materials to families displaced by fires, floods or other emergencies. Maria Cristina recalled the devastation of the fire that destroyed her home, saying, “It was very painful… I only have thanks today.”

On 11 July the governor signed Law 7.906/2026 establishing a yearly “Dia do Gengibre” on 15 May, starting in 2027. The measure recognises the ginger sector’s economic and cultural role: in 2025 the crop generated more than R$27.7 million, with nearly 2,000 tons sold by 33 producers, 30 of whom operate in Vargem Bonita. Emater‑DF president Cleison Duval said the recognition “strengthens a production chain built over decades.” The law aims to boost the market and honour families of Japanese descent who have cultivated ginger in the region.
