Governador Edison Lobão Mayor faces legal action over nepotism allegations

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Maranhão (MPMA) has filed two civil public actions against the Mayor of Governador Edison Lobão, Flávio Soares Lima, and the municipality due to alleged nepotism. The 1st Prosecutor's Office of Imperatriz identified at least 19 cases involving the appointment of relatives of the mayor, vice-mayor, city councilors, and municipal secretaries to commissioned positions.

According to the MPMA, the appointments include the mayor's wife, brother, nephews, and son-in-law, as well as relatives of other local authorities. The Prosecutor's Office noted that previous recommendations to dismiss these individuals were not followed.

The legal actions seek to hold the mayor accountable for administrative misconduct. Requested penalties include a civil fine of up to 24 times the remuneration received at the time of the acts, full reimbursement of damages, and a ban on contracting with the Public Power or receiving tax benefits. Against the municipality, the MPMA is requesting the suspension of appointments and payments to the identified individuals, the dismissal of those involved, and a requirement for new appointees to declare the absence of nepotism.
