Government education and nutrition initiatives launched in Solomon Islands and Barbados

In the Solomon Islands, Prime Minister Matthew Wale has reaffirmed the government's commitment to implementing a free education policy. The initiative aims to cover students from Early Childhood Education through to the Solomon Islands National University and TAFE/TVET institutions. The Prime Minister noted that while the rollout will face challenges, the policy is essential for developing a skilled workforce in STEM to help double the country's GDP over the next several years. The Ministry has estimated an additional $1.1 billion is required, though the government has requested a review of the costing assumptions to ensure the plan is realistic and sustainable.

In Barbados, a national school breakfast programme has launched, providing meals to approximately 17,000 nursery and primary public school students. Minister of Education Transformation Chad Blackman stated the initiative is designed to ease the burden on parents and ensure children have access to nutritious meals. The programme is part of an expansion of the National Nutrition Policy, offering various savory and non-savory menu options to support student well-being.
