Government infrastructure and economic strategies face criticism in Ghana and Guyana

In Ghana, Duncan Amoah, Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), has criticized the government's strategy regarding the 24-hour economy. Amoah argued against using public funds to construct new markets, suggesting that physical infrastructure alone cannot change social behaviors or community rhythms. He stated that the government should instead focus on creating enabling conditions for night-time commerce, such as improved street lighting, increased police presence, and incentives for businesses like pharmacies and retail shops to operate at night.

In Guyana, Opposition MP Sherod Duncan has called for the resignation of Public Works Minister Juan Edghill following a visit to the unfinished G$1.4 billion Port Kaituma stelling. Duncan described the project as being at a standstill, noting that completion deadlines have been repeatedly pushed back from late 2023 to 2026. The MP argued that the delay in modernizing maritime transportation has left residents dependent on aging vessels and linked the lack of progress to broader accountability concerns regarding engineering supervision and planning.
