Government officials and agencies impersonated in rising fraud scams

Authorities in the United Kingdom and Australia are issuing warnings regarding sophisticated impersonation scams targeting the public.

In the UK, police in Teddington, Middlesex, have warned of fraudsters going door-to-door. These individuals claim to be government officials conducting identity checks for a census or other initiatives. They may use official-looking documents, laptops, or biometric devices to appear legitimate, often requesting personal information, photographs, or fingerprints.

In Australia, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (Austrac) is reporting an increase in scammers impersonating its investigators and senior staff, including the CEO. These criminals use emails, phone calls, and messages to pressure victims into making urgent payments or disclosing sensitive data. Austrac CEO Brendan Thomas clarified that the agency does not contact the public unexpectedly to demand payments, particularly through cryptocurrencies or encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
