Government policy shifts regarding energy subsidies and taxation
In Argentina, the National Energy Secretariat has implemented changes to the energy subsidy system, replacing the previous RASE scheme with the 'Servicios Energéticos Focalizados' (SEF). José Luis Santana, coordinator of the Political Representation Secretariat, warned that users may receive emails requesting data updates or modifications. While those already registered do not need to re-apply unless contacted, new users—particularly those transitioning from bottled gas to natural gas—must complete the process. Local authorities are providing assistance to help citizens navigate these changes and understand their bills, which can reach between $120,000 and $150,000, impacting retirees and low-income families.
In Costa Rica, Deputy Salvador Padilla of the Liberación Nacional party has accused the government of planning tax increases and the removal of subsidies for senior citizens, such as free bus transportation. Despite denials from President Laura Fernández, Padilla argued that removing exemptions from the basic basket and applying VAT to various sectors constitutes a hidden tax increase. He also criticized government budget cuts in the Judiciary, Public Security, and the Ministry of Public Education.
