Governor Abigail Spanberger reviews Virginia workforce and paid leave policies

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger recently engaged with workforce development and labor policy initiatives during Labor Week. She toured Cornerstone Craftsman, an Alexandria-based nonprofit founded by Roberto Gomez that provides mentorship, skilled trades training, and academic tutoring to pre-apprentices. Spanberger expressed interest in the program’s ability to support young people entering the building trades and noted that the state’s Secretariat of Labor would be reviewing the model.

Additionally, Governor Spanberger hosted a roundtable discussion regarding Virginia’s new paid family and medical leave laws, the first of its kind in the Southern United States. During the session, advocates from MomsRising shared personal experiences regarding the necessity of paid leave for families. The discussion focused on ensuring the implementation of these laws effectively supports diverse households, including those navigating adoption and varying employment jurisdictions.
