Danna Yanina linked to process in Tamaulipas femicide case amid protests and governor's justice pledge

A judge in Tamaulipas linked 18‑year‑old Danna Yanina to the process for her probable participation in the femicide of 13‑year‑old Dafne Zapata Quintos, who died on 16 July 2026 at the Marina Doenitz military academy in Ciudad Madero. The initial hearing at the Centro Integral de Justicia in Altamira lasted about twelve hours, included a recess, and during that break Danna suffered a nervous‑crisis that required medical attention.

After the ruling, Danna was transferred to the Altamira prison under the guard of the police processual unit, despite a brief protest by supporters that tried to block the transport. Her father, Ofil Cruz, publicly denounced the attempt and called for calm.

The defense announced it will appeal the decision and file an amparo, asserting Danna’s innocence. Meanwhile, three individuals – Danna, the academy director Jorge Luis and the instructor “Estrellita” – remain in preventive detention.

Governor Américo Villarreal met with the victim’s family, reaffirming a commitment to apply “all the weight of the law” and to pursue justice. Grandmother Laura Martínez confronted the governor, demanding accountability, while mother Alejandra Quintos said five adults were present with the victim’s body and that more suspects are still being sought.
