Governor Andy Beshear outlines strategy for Democrats in the South

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has outlined a strategy for Democrats to compete in Republican-leaning Southern states. Speaking at a fundraising event in North Little Rock, Arkansas, Beshear advised party members to focus on daily needs, lead with empathy, and “start talking like normal human beings again” to avoid alienating voters.

Beshear, who won reelection in Kentucky in 2023, emphasized that Democrats must address the feeling among Southerners that they have been “forgotten and left out.” He cited his own success in a state where a majority of voters supported Donald Trump as evidence that the party can win in the region by focusing on compassion and practical issues.

In separate remarks in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Beshear discussed his new book, “Go And Do Likewise,” which touches on healing political divides and managing statewide crises. During the discussion, he addressed his past legislative actions, including his veto of a bill restricting gender-affirming care for minors, stating his desire to provide “justice” rather than “judgment” to vulnerable populations.
