Governor Bobby Nasution inaugurates Kualanamu‑Mandailing flight, cites high fuel costs

Governor of North Sumatra, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, officially opened the inaugural Wings Air service linking Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) with Mandailing Natal (Madina) on 1 August 2026. The ceremony was attended by Lion Group executives, PT Angkasa Pura Aviasi officials, members of the Indonesian parliament and regional leaders. Nasution said the new route will cut travel time, improve connectivity and stimulate tourism and economic growth in the province.

During his remarks he also highlighted the persistently high price of aviation turbine fuel (avtur) at Kualanamu, noting that some airlines refuel at other airports or abroad to reduce costs. He urged the central government and the DPR to review fuel pricing and tax policies so the airport can become a more competitive gateway for western Indonesia and attract further investment, including MRO facilities.
