Gov. Celina Leão announces new protected areas, health hires and infrastructure projects in Brazil's Distrito Federal

On 3 July, Governor Celina Leão of Brazil's Distrito Federal signed decrees creating two new protected areas: the Área de Relevante Interesse Ecológico (Arie) of Ribeirão Sobradinho (643.65 ha) and the Refúgio de Vida Silvestre Canela de Ema (181.02 ha). Together with the existing Monumento Natural Serrinha, the design forms an ecological corridor of more than 1,239 ha of Cerrado.

The same day the governor announced a hiring plan for 709 health‑care workers, including 511 doctors (320 temporary contracts and 191 juridical contracts) and 198 newly appointed permanent staff such as nurses, technicians and dentists, intended to boost service capacity without increasing the payroll budget.

Leão also extended the partnership with the Archdiocese of Brasília for the Cathedral Metropolitan, adding R$ 89,975.61 to bring total investment to R$ 2,996,660.56 and creating a new cultural gallery that will host a café, souvenir kiosk and temporary‑exhibition space.

Further initiatives included launching the DF+Digital programme at the Brasília Technology Park, approving security‑camera installation at permanent fairs, inaugurating the duplicated Guará‑Núcleo Bandeirante road, delivering the new 15th Police Battalion, and signing a procurement order for new metro‑train sets, reinforcing public‑security, mobility and digital modernisation.
