Nigerian Resident Doctors Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid Arrears
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) issued a communique after its July National Executive Council meeting in Gombe, giving the federal government a deadline of 8:00 a.m. on 10 August 2026 to meet a list of demands or face a total and comprehensive industrial strike (TICS). The demands include immediate payment of outstanding 25 % and 35 % Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) upward‑review arrears, 19 months of professional allowance arrears, and all salary and promotion arrears owed to doctors in federal health institutions. NARD also seeks the accelerated conclusion and implementation of the Medical and Health Workers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement, full disbursement of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund to omitted beneficiaries, and measures to protect healthcare workers, including a national protocol and legislation to criminalise assaults.
Separately, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State approved the Specialist Allowance and the Professional Allowance Table for doctors in the state’s public health sector, a move praised by the Nigerian Medical Association’s Ogun chapter.
In a related development, the Coalition of Healthcare Professionals in Tertiary Education Institutions of Nigeria announced it will sue the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non‑Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) over the exclusion of health workers from the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CONTTA) despite being dues‑paying union members.
