California Governor Gavin Newsom Faces DOJ Probe Over Family Finances and Charity Payments

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating California Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, focusing on the couple’s financial affairs, including the handling of nonprofit donations and the governor’s personal tax returns. Newsom pledged to release his tax returns, saying the inquiry is politically motivated, while critics point to a $3.7 million compensation package paid to Siebel’s charity and other “behested payments” solicited from corporations and donors with business before the state.

Complicating the probe, former chief of staff Dana Williamson pleaded guilty to conspiracy involving false tax returns and the misappropriation of campaign funds linked to former HHS secretary Xavier Becerra. Although no charges have been filed against Newsom or his wife, the investigation has drawn attention to potential conflicts of interest and ethical concerns surrounding the governor’s fundraising practices and the family’s real‑estate transactions.
