Governor Hochul addresses socialist influence and education in New York

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed skepticism regarding the ability of socialists to win statewide elections, despite her growing collaborative relationship with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. In an interview, Hochul described the state as more “purple” than typically perceived, noting that a significant portion of voters are independents who often lean Republican. She emphasized that the Democratic Party will remain a “capitalist party,” citing New York City’s status as a major hub for tech jobs and business revenue as essential for funding social programs like universal childcare and housing.

Separately, Hochul has voiced frustration regarding her limited authority over the State Education Department (SED). While she has expressed a desire for more oversight following changes to high school graduation requirements, critics suggest that pursuing such power would require challenging the state legislature and powerful teacher unions.
