Governor Mike DeWine urges President Trump to halt immigrant deportations

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has issued an appeal to President Donald Trump to reconsider deportation policies targeting immigrants, specifically those from Haiti living under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). DeWine, a Republican who has previously endorsed Trump, argues that the state’s economy relies heavily on foreign-born workers. He noted that immigrants accounted for approximately 60 percent of Ohio’s population growth over the last decade and highlighted their essential roles in industries such as long-term care and in the economic recovery of Springfield.

DeWine suggested that rather than broad crackdowns, the administration should focus on legal reforms. His proposals include creating pathways for foreign STEM graduates to obtain green cards, reworking the H-1B visa program to prioritize essential skills, and providing employers with better tools to verify work eligibility.

Critics, including Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies, have argued that these appeals from both Republican business interests and progressive leaders prioritize migrant labor over the interests of American citizens. Similarly, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has advocated for the Haitian community in New York City, citing their long-term residency and contributions to the local economy.
