Governor Natembeya challenges President Ruto over Trans Nzoia projects

A political dispute between Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and President William Ruto has escalated over the management of development projects in Kitale. The conflict centers on the Masinde Muliro Market and the construction of the new Kitale Level 5 Hospital.

Governor Natembeya has accused the national government of taking undue credit for county-funded projects. He vowed to storm the newly launched Masinde Muliro Market on Monday to reopen it for local traders, challenging the administration's recent actions. Additionally, the Governor expressed intent to contest the construction of the Kitale Level 5 Hospital, which has been handed over to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). Natembeya argued that the project is being conducted on county land without proper local government involvement, calling for the national government to respect constitutional devolution.

President Ruto defended the national government's role, pledging KSh1 billion toward the hospital project to improve regional healthcare access. During a recent tour of the region, the President criticized the county administration regarding healthcare services and stalled infrastructure.

The tension recently resulted in physical confrontations between rival political supporters in Kitale, leading to injuries to two police officers and damage to government vehicles. Natembeya also raised concerns regarding the reported withdrawal of his security detail following his public criticisms of the presidency.
