Governor Roberto Cidade Secures Evangelical Backing for Amazonas Re‑election

On Tuesday night, 28 February, Governor Roberto Cidade of Amazonas held a gathering in the Dom Pedro neighbourhood of Manaus, where more than 600 evangelical leaders—including pastors, apostles and religious figures—publicly endorsed his pre‑candidacy for a second term. Cidade, a member of the União Progressista, stressed that churches are the foundation of society and that family‑oriented values will guide his administration, saying, “I am here because I represent you… I leave this with a tranquil heart and the testimony of an Amazonian who believes in doing good for the people.”

The event highlighted the growing political weight of the evangelical segment in the state, which the 2022 IBGE census estimates at 1.2 million adherents, or 39.37 % of the population—third highest in Brazil. Also in attendance were former governor and Senate candidate Wilson Lima, state deputy Felipe Souza, and councilwoman Thaysa Lippy, underscoring the campaign’s strategy to court the religious vote ahead of the upcoming elections.
