Govinda issues legal warning over false rumors and deepfakes

Bollywood actor and former Member of Parliament Govinda has issued a legal warning against the distribution of false, defamatory, or unverified content regarding his personal and family life. The notice, which threatens legal action and damages of up to Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion), specifically targets media organizations, digital platforms, and content creators.

The warning highlights the misuse of artificial intelligence, specifically flagging the circulation of deepfakes, morphed images, and synthetic audio or video recordings. Govinda’s team stated that no authorization has been granted to anyone to manipulate or monetize his identity, voice, or likeness.

Legal actions may be pursued under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000, covering grounds such as defamation, invasion of privacy, identity theft, and cybercrime. Potential remedies include court orders affecting bank accounts, property transactions, and the seizure of passports.
