Puma sightings trigger alerts in Poland and Czech Republic
Reports of a puma sighting have caused significant concern and official responses across parts of Poland and the Czech Republic.
In the Świdnica Forest District, authorities confirmed the presence of a large cat after a camera trap captured a photo of an animal resembling a puma on August 9. The sighting, potentially near Michałkowa or Zagórze Śląskie, has led foresters to urge the public to maintain a safe distance and report sightings to emergency services.
In contrast, reports in the Goworowo municipality were revealed to be a hoax. Local officials confirmed that a resident's false report about a predator near Rębisze-Parcele and Rębisze-Działy was a joke, prompting police investigations into potential legal consequences for causing a false alarm.
Additionally, mysterious tracks were reported on Bolko Island in Opole. While specialists identified tracks of a “low-slung animal with massive paws,” the Opole Zoo confirmed no animals had escaped and no pumas are currently kept at the facility. Authorities continue to monitor the area via drones and surveillance.
