Goya declares 180-day water and climate emergency

The municipality of Goya, Argentina, has declared a water and climate emergency for a period of 180 days, with the possibility of an extension. The decision, signed by Mayor Mariano Hormaechea, responds to intense rainfall, the rising levels of the Paraná River, and risks associated with the El Niño phenomenon.

The declaration empowers the municipal executive to adopt necessary administrative and financial measures to mitigate the crisis, preserve public order, and ensure community safety. The Emergency Operations Committee (COE) has been convened to manage the situation.

Currently, the river has reached a height of 5.60 meters. While the situation remains controlled and no evacuations have been reported yet, the municipality is implementing contingency plans. These include establishing more than ten proximity evacuation centers and distributing sandbags and earth to vulnerable families in areas such as the Santa Catalina neighborhood and coastal sectors.
