Gozo electricity outages spark calls for Energy Minister's resignation
Large parts of Gozo experienced widespread electricity outages following two major faults in Enemalta’s 33kV underground high-voltage cable network. The faults, located in Xewkija and near a distribution centre in Comino, disrupted power for residents, businesses, and tourists during intense summer heat.
Enemalta crews worked through the night to repair the damaged sections. The company noted that repairing underground high-voltage cables is a complex process involving excavation, moisture testing, and jointing works. Additional generators are being deployed to provide temporary electricity to affected areas.
Energy Minister Miriam Dalli faced intense public criticism and calls for her resignation following the incident. While Dalli stated that restoring electricity was the immediate priority and that she was in contact with officials, many residents expressed frustration on social media, citing recurring energy failures in recent summers.
