GPS technology enables precise mapping of eagle migration

New GPS technology has enabled the first precise mapping of eagle migration patterns, marking a significant advancement 125 years after the inception of scientific bird banding in 1899.

Unlike traditional banding, which required the physical recapture of a bird to connect two geographic points, modern GPS tags are small, solar-powered, and equipped with long-lasting batteries. These devices record comprehensive flight metrics, including altitude, speed, rhythm, and rest stops. This allows researchers to move beyond broad geographic estimates to view migration as a detailed, point-to-point itinerary.

While this technology provides unprecedented data on individual birds, researchers note that the specific routes of many species within their broader migratory corridors remain undocumented. Each new GPS tracking effort contributes a unique fragment to the global atlas of avian migrations.
