GPT-6 Astra cracks unsolved 1941 Nazi Enigma message
GPT-6 Astra has successfully decrypted an unsolved 1941 German Army Enigma message in approximately 10 hours. The 82-letter transmission, sent during the German invasion of the Soviet Union, had remained unread for decades.
Directed by researcher Carter Leffen, the process involved more than simple brute-force attempts. The AI and its specialist agents autonomously searched historical archives, compared uncertain letters from surviving copies, identified contextual clues, and built an Enigma simulator. The system also wrote and ran its own cryptanalysis code to test competing settings.
The decrypted message was a field communication regarding a route of march and a position report in Rosenow, rather than a high-level strategic order. The achievement was highlighted by Polymarket following the successful recovery and validation of the plaintext.
