GPU market shifts: RTX 5090 shortages and new GDDR7 memory developments
The graphics hardware market is experiencing significant shifts driven by artificial intelligence demand and next-generation memory developments. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 is facing extreme supply shortages and massive price hikes, with some retailers listing units for as much as $9,300. This surge is attributed to companies and individuals purchasing the cards as AI accelerators due to their 32GB of VRAM.
Looking toward future hardware, memory manufacturers are reportedly preparing GDDR7 chips with higher capacities, such as 4GB and 6GB per chip. These advancements, potentially arriving around 2027 or 2028, could allow for much larger VRAM capacities in future GPU architectures like Nvidia’s Rubin or AMD’s RDNA 5.
In software developments, experimental projects are attempting to break vendor locks. A developer has successfully implemented a version of Nvidia’s DLSS 5 (neural rendering) on Intel Arc GPUs using AI-generated code. While currently experimental with low performance, the project demonstrates the potential for cross-platform compatibility of advanced AI upscaling technologies.
