Grace Nortey, legendary Ghanaian actress, dies at 89
Veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey, affectionately known as ‘Maame Gyata’ (Mother Lion), has died at the age of 89. She passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre.
Nortey was a prominent figure in Ghana’s film and theatre industry for over five decades. She was widely celebrated for her portrayals of strong, principled, and outspoken women. Her extensive career included roles in classic television and stage productions such as ‘Obra’, ‘Osofo Dadzie’, ‘Key Soap Concert Party’, and ‘Thursday Theatre’.
Her filmography also featured notable works including ‘Sinking Sands’ and the 2015 Netflix production ‘Beasts of No Nation’, which introduced her talent to an international audience. She is survived by five children, including actress Sheila Nortey.
