Grada Kilomba’s ‘O Barco’ installation opens in São Paulo

The art installation ‘O Barco’ (The Boat), created by Portuguese artist Grada Kilomba, opened on Tuesday at Sesc Pompeia in São Paulo. The work serves as a critical reflection on the transatlantic slave trade, which lasted approximately 400 years and saw over 4.8 million enslaved Africans brought to Brazil.

The installation occupies 220 square meters and is constructed from 134 blocks of burnt wood. These blocks are arranged to trace the silhouette of a large vessel's hull, aiming to recreate the oppressive architecture of slave ship holds. Kilomba’s work seeks to challenge historical narratives that romanticize maritime expansion by making visible the traumatic reality of those transported in the holds.

Beyond historical commemoration, the piece connects colonial violence to contemporary humanitarian crises, such as forced migration. The installation was adapted to fit the physical constraints of the venue, a design choice that Kilomba suggests symbolizes the fragmented and incomplete nature of history.
