Gradačac femicide anniversary highlights systemic protection failures

Three years after the brutal murder of Nizama Hećimović in Gradačac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the case remains a significant symbol in the fight against femicide and domestic violence. On August 11, 2023, Nermin Sulejmanović killed his common-law wife, Nizama Hećimović, in front of their child, broadcasting parts of the crime live on social media to thousands of viewers.

Following the murder of Hećimović, Sulejmanović continued a violent spree in the town center, killing Dženiz and Denis Onder and wounding several others before dying himself. The tragedy sparked widespread protests across the country.

The case highlighted critical failures within the legal and protective systems. Despite Hećimović seeking help and reporting domestic violence to authorities in July 2023, a request by the police to the Municipal Court in Gradačac for protective measures, including restraining orders, was not granted. This failure to provide timely institutional protection has led to ongoing debates regarding accountability and the effectiveness of domestic violence prevention measures in the region.
