Grafenegg Festival faces storms and musical shifts

The Grafenegg Festival recently hosted several notable performances marked by both artistic debate and weather disruptions. During a performance of Richard Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ by the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra under conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, a storm forced the evacuation of the Wolkenturm venue. The production featured a condensed version of the opera, which drew mixed reactions from purists, though vocal performances by Andreas Schager and Georg Zeppenfeld were noted.

In a subsequent performance, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra appeared under Santtu-Matias Rouvali. Pianist Víkingur Ólafsson performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, navigating ideal weather conditions that included birdsong during his set. Additionally, festival director Rudolf Buchbinder stepped in to conduct the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra for Mozart piano concertos after Riccardo Muti was unable to perform due to a medical procedure.
