Grafenegg Festival opens 20th anniversary season
The Grafenegg Festival in Austria has launched its 20th anniversary season with a major opening performance. Artistic director Rudolf Buchbinder performed a piano solo for Ludwig van Beethoven’s ‘Chorfantasie’, a rare work that precedes the Ninth Symphony.
The opening night featured the Philharmonia Orchestra London, conducted by Cristian Macelaru, performing on the open-air stage at the Wolkenturm. The program concluded with Carl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’, featuring soloists Nikola Hillebrand, Nicholas Phan, and German Olvera, alongside the Wiener Singverein and various Viennese choirs.
The festival, which runs until September 6, will include a diverse program ranging from chamber music and symphonies to operatic works and solo concerts.
