Graffignano hazardous waste discovery increases cleanup costs

During environmental remediation efforts in Graffignano, an additional 8,868 tons of hazardous waste have been discovered in the Pascolaro, Casettone, and Bivio del Pellegrino areas. This unexpected volume has necessitated an increase in the project's budget.

The Lazio Region has allocated an additional 1.5 million euros to address the discovery, bringing the total funding for the operation from 13 million to 14.5 million euros. The total area affected by the cleanup has also been updated to 1.39 million square meters.

Sogesid, the public company managing the remediation, reported that the amount of waste found during excavations was greater and more unpredictable than initial estimates. This environmental emergency in the Tuscia region involves sites where approximately 20,000 tons of toxic waste had previously been identified over the last two decades.
