Grafschaft Bentheim County bans river water pumping, limits irrigation
Effective 7 August 2026, Grafschaft Bentheim County in Germany issued a general order restricting water extraction and irrigation to protect rivers, streams and groundwater that have fallen to historic low levels, including the Vechte River.
The order prohibits pumping water from rivers, streams or ditches for irrigation and bans watering of public and private lawns, sports fields and agricultural land between 12:00 and 18:00. Exemptions apply to highly water‑saving systems such as drip irrigation, greenhouses and container cultivation. Violations are classified as administrative offences and can be fined up to €50,000. The measures remain in force until 31 October 2026.
