Romania and Moldova face railway and transit challenges

The Romanian railway system faces a critical financial crisis. The National Railway Federation Movement Commercial Wagons has warned that train services may be suspended due to a two-month blockage in state funding. This lack of liquidity affects infrastructure administrator CFR SA and various rail operators, hindering their ability to pay for energy, maintenance, and infrastructure usage fees.

In Moldova, President Maia Sandu has expressed support for facilitating the transit of Ukrainian grain through the country, despite concerns from local farmers. Sandu emphasized that Moldova cannot turn its back on Ukraine, noting that other nations provide more significant military and financial aid.

Additionally, seven freight wagons loaded with grain derailed near Chircani, Moldova, on August 15. Moldovan Railways (CFM) reported that the wagons were successfully returned to the tracks by August 16, and efforts are underway to resume normal traffic on the affected sector.
