Gérald Darmanin withdraws from 2027 presidential race to support Édouard Philippe

Gérald Darmanin, the French Minister of Justice, has announced that he will not run for the 2027 presidential election. Instead, he has officially declared his support for Édouard Philippe, the leader of the Horizons party.

Darmanin justified his decision by stating that the national interest is not served by multiplying candidates, especially given the difficult social situation in France. He expressed a desire to avoid political division within the central and right-wing blocs, warning that fragmentation could lead to a second round between Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Darmanin plans to hold a political meeting with his supporters on August 30 in Tourcoing, where Édouard Philippe is expected to attend. This move provides significant momentum to Philippe, who is currently a leading candidate within the macronist bloc, ahead of Renaissance Secretary General Gabriel Attal.

Other political figures, such as MoDem president François Bayrou, have called for a primary among reformist democrats to unify the camp, though Darmanin noted that it may now be too late to organize such a process.
