Grameen Kalyan ordered to pay 666 crore BDT in tax
The High Court has released the full text of its judgment upholding the National Board of Revenue (NBR) claim that Grameen Kalyan, an institution owned by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, must pay over 666 crore BDT in income tax.
The dispute involves tax reassessments for five fiscal years, spanning from 2012-13 to 2016-17. Grameen Kalyan had filed two writ petitions in 2017 to challenge the legality of the NBR's claims, but the High Court bench, comprising Justice Md. Mujibur Rahman Mia and Justice Rezaul Karim, dismissed these petitions on September 10.
The full judgment, which includes documents of 15 and 32 pages respectively, mandates that the payment be settled within the next three fiscal years. The legal proceedings previously faced a complication when a prior ruling was withdrawn because a junior judge on the bench had formerly served as a Deputy Attorney General for the government. The case was subsequently reassigned to a new bench, which issued the current decision.
