Gran Acuario Mazatlán showcases Sea of Cortez ecosystems
The Gran Acuario Mazatlán, designed by Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao, is a major facility dedicated to the ecosystems of the Sea of Cortez. The architecture is designed to resemble a future ruin being reclaimed by nature, utilizing textured concrete and native vegetation to blend the structure into the coastal landscape.
As the largest aquarium dedicated to the Sea of Cortez in Latin America, the facility offers an immersive journey through terrestrial, coastal, and oceanic habitats. Key features include the Great Oceanic Tank, which features a massive viewing window, and specialized zones such as the intertidal habitat, mangrove areas, and a coral reef recreation.
Beyond tourism, the complex serves as a center for scientific research and environmental education. It houses various species, including rescued wildlife, Humboldt penguins, and capybaras, with a focus on protecting regional marine biodiversity.
