Gran Canaria faces coastal warnings and holiday closures during Día del Pino

Gran Canaria is experiencing significant coastal activity and commercial changes due to the 'Día del Pino' holiday on September 8.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a yellow warning for coastal phenomena in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Strong waves, potentially exceeding three meters, and wind gusts surpassing 70 km/h are expected. These 'living tides,' caused by the gravitational influence of the Moon and Sun, have led to seawater flooding promenades and streets, particularly in the southeast of the island near Arinaga.

Regarding local commerce, September 8 is a public holiday in Gran Canaria. While many businesses in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be closed, certain establishments will remain operational. Supermarkets such as HiperDino and SuperDino are expected to maintain their usual holiday schedules, whereas Mercadona will remain closed. Shopping centers like Las Arenas will close their retail stores, though leisure and dining venues are expected to remain open during specific hours.
