Gran Canaria waste workers announce indefinite strike

Waste management workers in southeastern Gran Canaria have announced an indefinite strike affecting the municipalities of Ingenio, Agüimes, and Santa Lucía. The labor action is a response to wages that have reportedly remained frozen for over six years.

According to worker representatives, employees agreed to a freeze on their rights in 2020 to facilitate a transition to a new operator, under the promise of future salary adjustments. However, those adjustments have not materialized. The service provider, AZ Servicios Urbanos y Medio Ambiente (Azsuma), has indicated it will not accept any agreements that increase costs, even by a single euro.
