Gran Chaco reforestation: 100,000 trees planted by TNC and John Deere

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Argentina, in partnership with John Deere, has completed the planting of over 100,000 native trees in the Gran Chaco region. The initiative has restored 367.2 hectares across the provinces of Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero, and Chaco.

The project aims to rebuild ecological connectivity in landscapes fragmented by agriculture and livestock through the creation of “agrocorridors,” allowing biodiversity and agricultural activities to coexist sustainably. Approximately 80% of the trees planted were white algarrobo (Neltuma alba), a species selected for its drought resistance and ability to regenerate soil and improve water infiltration.

Technological advancements were utilized in the project, including aerial seeding via drones in collaboration with the startup ReForest Latam. The effort involved multiple stakeholders, including the Faculty of Forestry at UNSE, which produced 20,000 specimens, and local producers who committed to protecting the trees and avoiding deforestation in high-value conservation areas.
