Gran Concepción drivers seek better labor conditions via electronic payments

Public transport drivers in Gran Concepción, Chile, are looking toward the transition to electronic payment systems as a potential opportunity to improve long-standing precarious labor conditions.

Union leaders, including José Coronado of the Rengo Lientur line and members of the Coordinadora de Conductores de Chile and UNTRAP, have reported that current working conditions are extremely poor. Key grievances include inadequate base salaries and issues with contract enforcement. Drivers have noted that while contracts may list a minimum wage, a significant portion of the earnings is often retained by employers, leaving workers to rely on commissions from passenger fares to sustain their income.
